1 καὶ ἐρεῖ ἀκούσατε δὴ ταῦτα αἱ ἀρχαὶ οἴκου Ιακωβ καὶ οἱ κατάλοιποι οἴκου Ισραηλ οὐχ ὑμῖν ἐστιν τοῦ γνῶναι τὸ κρίμα 2 οἱ μισοῦντες τὰ καλὰ καὶ ζητοῦντες τὰ πονηρά ἁρπάζοντες τὰ δέρματα αὐτῶν ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς σάρκας αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῶν ὀστέων αὐτῶν 3 ὃν τρόπον κατέφαγον τὰς σάρκας τοῦ λαοῦ μου καὶ τὰ δέρματα αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῶν ὀστέων αὐτῶν ἐξέδειραν καὶ τὰ ὀστέα αὐτῶν συνέθλασαν καὶ ἐμέλισαν ὡς σάρκας εἰς λέβητα καὶ ὡς κρέα εἰς χύτραν 4 οὕτως κεκράξονται πρὸς κύριον καὶ οὐκ εἰσακούσεται αὐτῶν καὶ ἀποστρέψει τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἐπονηρεύσαντο ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασιν αὐτῶν ἐ{P'} αὐτούς 1 But no, this is my word to you, chieftains of Jacob’s line, rulers of Israel: Who should acclaim justice, if not you? 2 Alas, that you should be the foes of right, the friends of wrong! Beasts of prey, that will have skin and flesh both, leave nothing save the bare bone. 3 My people! And you will gnaw flesh of them, tear skin of them, break bones of them; cut them to pieces, meat for your pot, roast for your oven! 4 What marvel, if the Lord will not listen to such cry as yours, turns his back on you in your distress, for your ill deserving? 1

Et dixi: Audite, princeps Jacob,
et duces domus Israël:
numquid non vestrum est scire judicium,
2
qui odio habetis bonum, et diligitis malum;
qui violenter tollitis pelles eorum desuper eis,
et carnem eorum desuper ossibus eorum;
3
qui comederunt carnem populi mei,
et pellem eorum desuper excoriaverunt,
et ossa eorum confregerunt,
et conciderunt sicut in lebete,
et quasi carnem in medio ollæ?
4
Tunc clamabunt ad Dominum, et non exaudiet eos,
et abscondet faciem suam ab eis in tempore illo,
sicut nequiter egerunt in adinventionibus suis.
5 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐπὶ τοὺς προφήτας τοὺς πλανῶντας τὸν λαόν μου τοὺς δάκνοντας ἐν τοῖς ὀδοῦσιν αὐτῶν καὶ κηρύσσοντας ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν εἰρήνην καὶ οὐκ ἐδόθη εἰς τὸ στόμα αὐτῶν ἤγειραν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν πόλεμον 6 διὰ τοῦτο νὺξ ὑμῖν ἔσται ἐξ ὁράσεως καὶ σκοτία ὑμῖν ἔσται ἐκ μαντείας καὶ δύσεται ὁ ἥλιος ἐπὶ τοὺς προφήτας καὶ συσκοτάσει ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς ἡ ἡμέρα 7 καὶ καταισχυνθήσονται οἱ ὁρῶντες τὰ ἐνύπνια καὶ καταγελασθήσονται οἱ μάντεις καὶ καταλαλήσουσιν κα{T'} αὐτῶν πάντες αὐτοί διότι οὐκ ἔσται ὁ εἰσακούων αὐτῶν 8 ἐὰν μὴ ἐγὼ ἐμπλήσω ἰσχὺν ἐν πνεύματι κυρίου καὶ κρίματος καὶ δυναστείας τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαι τῷ Ιακωβ ἀσεβείας αὐτοῦ καὶ τῷ Ισραηλ ἁμαρτίας αὐτοῦ 5 And this message the Lord has for prophets that guide my people amiss, prophets that must have their mouths filled ere they will cry, All’s well; sop thou must give them, else thou shalt be their sworn enemy. 6 Visions would you see, all shall be night around you, search you the skies, you shall search in the dark; never a prophet but his sun is set, his day turned into twilight! 7 Seers that see nothing, baffled diviners, acknowledge they, finger on lip, word from God is none. 8 But here stands one that is full of the Lord’s spirit; vigour it lends me, and discernment, and boldness, fault of Jacob to denounce, guilt of Israel to proclaim. 5
Hæc dicit Dominus super prophetas,
qui seducunt populum meum:
qui mordent dentibus suis,
et prædicant pacem;
et si quis non dederit in ore eorum quippiam,
sanctificant super eum prælium.
6
Propterea nox vobis pro visione erit,
et tenebræ vobis pro divinatione;
et occumbet sol super prophetas,
et obtenebrabitur super eos dies.
7
Et confundentur qui vident visiones,
et confundentur divini;
et operient omnes vultos suos,
quia non est responsum Dei.
8
Verumtamen ego repletus sum fortitudine spiritus Domini,
judicio, et virtute,
ut annuntiem Jacob scelus suum,
et Israël peccatum suum.
9 ἀκούσατε δὴ ταῦτα οἱ ἡγούμενοι οἴκου Ιακωβ καὶ οἱ κατάλοιποι οἴκου Ισραηλ οἱ βδελυσσόμενοι κρίμα καὶ πάντα τὰ ὀρθὰ διαστρέφοντες 10 οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες Σιων ἐν αἵμασιν καὶ Ιερουσαλημ ἐν ἀδικίαις 11 οἱ ἡγούμενοι αὐτῆς μετὰ δώρων ἔκρινον καὶ οἱ ἱερεῖς αὐτῆς μετὰ μισθοῦ ἀπεκρίνοντο καὶ οἱ προφῆται αὐτῆς μετὰ ἀργυρίου ἐμαντεύοντο καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον ἐπανεπαύοντο λέγοντες οὐχὶ κύριος ἐν ἡμῖν ἐστιν οὐ μὴ ἐπέλθῃ ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς κακά 12 διὰ τοῦτο δ{I'} ὑμᾶς Σιων ὡς ἀγρὸς ἀροτριαθήσεται καὶ Ιερουσαλημ ὡς ὀπωροφυλάκιον ἔσται καὶ τὸ ὄρος τοῦ οἴκου ὡς ἄλσος δρυμοῦ 9 A word with you, chieftains of Jacob’s line, rulers of Israel, that hold right abominable, and all justice pervert; 10 that build up strength of Sion, fortunes of Jerusalem, with deeds of bloodshed and of wrong! 11 Never a judge but has his price; never a priest tradition teaches, but for hire; never a prophet but must have his hand lined with silver! And all the while, how lean they on the Lord! Is not he in their midst (they ask)? How should harm befall them? 12 Trust me, for such guilt as yours I will turn mount Sion into plough-lands; standing heaps of stones that were once Jerusalem, and brushwood of the high forest growing over the Temple hill. 9
Audite hoc, principes domus Jacob,
et judices domus Israël,
qui abominamini judicium,
et omnia recta pervertitis:
10
qui ædificatis Sion in sanguinibus,
et Jerusalem in iniquitate.
11
Principes ejus in muneribus judicabant,
et sacerdotes ejus in mercede docebant,
et prophetæ ejus in pecunia divinabant:
et super Dominum requiescebant, dicentes:
Numquid non Dominus in medio nostrum?
non venient super nos mala.
12
Propter hoc, causa vestri, Sion quasi ager arabitur,
et Jerusalem quasi acervus lapidum erit,
et mons templi in excelsa silvarum.
